10 Ways Successful Entrepreneurs Are Different from Most Small Business Owners

Guest Post by Stacy Karacostas

The longer I’ve been in business, the more I’ve realized there are major differences between entrepreneurs who are successful, and those who aren’t. So I decided to make a list of the top ten and share these important insights with you…

  1. Successful business owners know there is always something more to learn. They make a point of reading books, taking classes, attending seminars, and looking at what others in their industry (or other industries) are doing.

Or, in the words of Jim Rohn, “Rich people have big libraries;
poor people have big TV’s.”

  1. They understand the power of delegating and outsourcing. You’d be hard pressed to find a millionaire who’s made it there all by themselves. Most have at least one assistant (virtual or in-house), many have teams of people they can rely on.
  2. Powerhouse business-owners are stingy with their time. Sure, we’ve all heard the phrase time is money. But when was the last time you calculated the value of every minute of your day? Or looked at how much time you actually spend being productive versus busy? Once you do, I guarantee you’ll change the way you use your time.
  3. They stay focused on the things that actually make money. You’re just not going to find a $2000/hour consultant doing their own filing or bookkeeping or Web design. Not when those tasks can be hired out at a fraction of the cost. Instead they stay focused on tasks that generate revenue or grow their business.
  4. Super-successful entrepreneurs take massive action. Because massive action produces massive results. By the same token, a little action produces small results. And no action at all…well, you get the picture.
  5. They don’t think in terms of failures and problems, only learning experiences and opportunities. It’s all about taking calculated risks, and if need be, failing forward. But nothing ventured truly is nothing gained. And there are never any guarantees a product, service, program or business is going to be successful.
  6. Smart business owners are always looking for ways to improve their offerings. Most millionaires don’t ever stop and rest on their laurels. Instead they are searching for ways to expand their current market share or break into new markets.
  7. Successful entrepreneurs typically don’t want to be involved in the day-to-day aspects of running a business. But they also know they can’t expect their business to suddenly start running itself. So they create processes, set up explicit expectations and create systems to manage workflow and keep employees and contractors on track.
  8. Savvy business owners pay attention to the numbers so they know when to cut their losses. And they don’t get personally attached to ideas. When something’s not working, not making money, or not helping them meet their goals, they have no qualms about making a change.
  9. Entrepreneurs earning six and seven figures don’t just go about running or growing their businesses willy nilly. They have goals. And they make plans to reach those goals. Which is why they become so successful.

If you want to become highly-successful, then the best thing you can do is mimic those who have already made it big—starting with these ten ideas.

What are your thoughts? Any other traits you’ve noticed? Please do share by leaving a comment below…

Finding Balance in Chaos

Guest Post by Premier Success Coach Kim Griffith, MA,        Co-Active Parenting and Wellness Coach

Does this sound familiar?

I had a plan … I was organized and in the flow. I had a deadline to write an article on trauma for a parenting magazine and write this blog post, so set aside 2 full days to complete them. I felt confident and in control of my time.

And then, the biggest ice storm hit Dallas and all my plans came to a screeching halt.  My daughter’s school closed so she was home.  Then came our power outages, and finally, my husband wrecked his car trying to get out of the driveway!  I had to take and pick him up from work (he’s a doctor and babies don’t wait to be delivered)!  Although this is an extreme scenario, it expresses how crazy life can get as we are juggling being a mom, wife and running a business.  When we love all of them, HOW DO WE FIND OUR BALANCE?

I have found that getting REGULATED (calm and centered) is of the utmost importance.  When we are stressed and run by thought patterns that keep us in “survival mode,” our brain is limited to fight, flight or freeze, which shows up as anxiety, fear, frustration, anger etc.  No one is getting their needs met in this state of mind, not to mention the toll it begins to take on our physical well-being.  When we can take a few deep, conscious breaths and find a sense of calm, we give our brain a chance to tap into creative solutions, increase our energy and have the space to ask some important questions.

Ask yourself, what is the most important thing to me right now in this moment?  What do I value the most in my life?  VALUES are our road map to making good decisions and living a truly happy life.  After getting regulated and asking myself these questions, I was able to regain my sense of calm, and be present in what I was doing.  My energy was amazing and I wrote this post in 20 minutes!  I felt productive, with my creative juices flowing.

I found my personal balance in this extreme set of circumstances by honoring and being in tune with my values and priorities. And this, I believe, is the first step in balancing meeting our own needs with the needs of our family. What is of highest value and priority to you?   Live in alignment with them and your business will flourish!

In summary….1) Breath  2) Regulate 3) Accept  4) Ask what is most important (Values, Priorities) 5) Be Present in what your doing 6) Trust and allow your creativity to flow!

CEO FOCUS: Executive Perspective

Guest Post by Premier Success Coach Sharon L. Hardy, MA, PCC, Executive Leadership Coach

As CEO of your business, are you spending more time focused on your business priorities, or fighting fires and caught in the daily grind?  This CEO FOCUS blog post will give you strategies to develop an Executive Perspective.

I work with company executives who run business units or functions within a larger organization.  They usually have a large staff, departments and infrastructure in place to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

As a small business owner, you may not have the large staff, but you still have the need to think like an executive. You are in charge of vision and profitability as well ensuring effective sales, marketing, product development and service delivery.  How can you think like a CEO?

An Executive Perspective means a 30,000 foot view – seeing the big picture and how the parts fit into the whole of your business (and life!).  The first key to success is:

PLANNING!  Annually, quarterly, weekly and daily. This puts you squarely in the CEO mindset, supporting your business growth.

Three tips from executive pros will make your planning more effective:

  • Annually:  Every October, re-set your goals and objectives (What & Why); in November, develop strategies and projects (How & When), and finalize your budget in December. Ensure that staff are part of the process and goals are written and assigned.
  • Quarterly:  Review the plans with those accountable and adjust projections as needed.  Glean the learning – what went well, what did not, what did you learn and what will you do differently?
  • Monthly and Weekly, review your goals and make sure action steps are on your daily schedule. Use a planner system that works for you.

Making planning a habit brings clarity, peace and balance – isn’t that why you wanted to be a CEO in the first place?

Become Financially Secure Now!

Guest Post by Camille Gaines

A financial woman is prepared to step into the role of overseeing her money at any time. This can seem a little scary, but the truth is that no one plans for the unexpected. There are several reasons why being prepared to take over the management of your money at any time is important, beyond the unexpected happening in your life.

The definition of overseeing your money varies depending on your individual circumstances.  For one, this may mean taking a leadership role when hiring and meeting with your financial advisor. For another, it may mean implementing a simple index strategy to create a diversified portfolio. Both require understanding the basics of investing in order to responsibly oversee your investments.

A Citigroup study found that 90% of women in the U.S. will be solely responsible for their own money at some point during their life. This alone is good enough reason for you to be actively involved with overseeing your money management if you are not. It is easy to defer the leadership role if someone else in your household is taking responsibility for your money since women already have so many roles, but this job only requires as many hours as you decide you want to spend, depending on the investing method you chose. A few consistent hours a year gets this essential job done.

Just knowing that you can step into any important role, especially one that affects the quality of your life as much as your money does, empowers you. Knowledge is what provides empowerment and confidence. Once you know the basics of exactly how much money you have, where and how it is invested, and how to measure and monitor the performance of your investments, you’ll be able to confidently do so at any time.

Things just feel bigger and scarier when we don’t know anything about them. Think of all the experiences in your life that you dreaded because they seemed big and intimidating, and then after you learned how to do them you wondered why you had been so intimidated by them. I remember how difficult it seemed to make online purchases when I first began; I would inevitably make some mistake and become frustrated. Now it seems silly that something so simple was difficult; unfortunately for my spending plan, now I find it all too easy!

What areas of your life have felt overwhelming until you learned them, and then they seemed easy? It usually only takes some initial involvement to start feeling confident and ready for the next steps. If the thought of overseeing your investments seems uncomfortable and overwhelming, decide what steps you need to take to become financially empowered so you can have real financial security.   http://www.financialwoman.com/

What is Coaching?

coaching

Coaching is a jointly-designed partnership that supports you and forwards your actions toward the achievement of your goals and vision of your business, career, or personal life.  Success means different things to each of us, and this partnership allows you to reach greater personal and business success. Strategic coaching principles and tools are used to empower you and restore a dynamic state of balance in the key areas of your life.

Throughout the coaching relationship, your coach will engage in direct and potent questioning, and may, on occasion, be directive.  You can count on your coach to ask honest and straightforward questions designed to open new thought processes, to make inquiries that offer inner discovery, and to make requests that lead to action and achievement.

Why does eWomenNetwork think that it is important to include two complimentary Coaching sessions as a Member Benefit?  Sandra Yancey, CEO of eWomenNetwork, believes that entrepreneurs and solopreneurs need a way to break through the isolation that comes from doing it all on their own.  “I would have never made it without help.  It was a pivotal turning point in my business.  Coaching represents an honest and objective  third party who can help you with your challenges and conflicting demands.   It’s similar to why you may hire an exercise trainer or join a weight loss group.  You know what you need to do, you just want someone to guide, support and hold you accountable.”  I asked Sandra how to select the appropriate coach.  “If you have several challenges and not sure which one to focus on first, think about the one thing that keeps you up at night,” she said.  “It can be either your greatest pain-point or that single burning idea you are so excited about.”

Coaching provides  an opportunity to gain clarity, translate your dreams and ideas into achievable goals, change old beliefs and patterns that hold you back, develop and maintain focus, design structures and systems to support your journey, and choose how you are going to live the rest of your life in a whole new way!  To learn more about coaching, go to  http://www.ewomennetwork.com/coaches.html.

Women’s Business Opportunities take off at the DFW Airport

With a major seven year project underway to bring new businesses into the Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW)  International Airport  community, opportunities are ripe for women owned businesses.  Over 153,000  passengers pass through the airport on a daily basis.  It covers more than 29.8 square miles and employs 1,775 people.

The DFW Airport is committed to increasing opportunities to involve disadvantaged, minority and women-owned businesses in all Airport contracts.  The Airport has recently issued a request for proposals (RFP) for multiple concession locations throughout Terminal A for retail, food and beverage, passenger services and shoe shine locations.  This is the first of many opportunities for women owned businesses, no matter where you are headquartered, to become a part of this seven year project.

A certification process gives greater opportunities to businesses that meet specific criteria, though certification is not a requisite to submit a proposal.  To become certified, business owners need to go through North Central Texas Regional Certification Agency which has a 90 day application timeframe.  ACDBE (Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Program)– Request  for Proposal prefers that business owners have a hands-on involvement as equity owners or as subcontracting suppliers.

Here you can find more information on how to do business with Dallas Ft. Worth Airport.  The first proposals are due December 3, 2010.   Don’t wait to take advantage of this opportunity to engage passengers from across the country and around the globe with your unique business!

Do You Think You Are Too Small to Do Business With the Government? Think Again!

If someone told you that you were missing an opportunity to earn millions in government contracts, what would you do? After a decade of commentary, delays, rewrites and litigation, the U.S. Small Business Administration has begun implementing a federal contracting program for Women-Owned Small Businesses (WOSB) that will directly impact you.  The Women’s Procurement Program focuses on 83 industries in which women are underrepresented in the federal contracting marketplace.  To be eligible for the program, firms must meet industry based small business size standards,  be 51% owned and controlled by women who are U.S. citizens, and must qualify as a small business in their primary industry.

“Women-owned businesses are one of the fastest growing sectors of our nation’s economy, and even during the economic downturn of the last few years, have been one of the key job creation engines in communities across the country,” SBA Administrator Karen Mills said.  “Despite their growth and the fact that women lead some of the strongest and most innovative companies, women-owned firms continue to be under-represented in the federal contracting marketplace.  This rule will be a platform for changing that by providing greater opportunities for women-owned small businesses to compete for and win federal contracts.”  Mills added.*

Two things really are surprising.  One, less than 80,000 women-owned businesses are currently registered to take advantage of this opportunity!  Two, categories that are included might easily fit your business description (here are just a few).

  • Business Support Services
  • Office Administrative services
  • Other Schools and Instruction

Dream Along With Me – Goal Setting for Results Beyond Your Wildest Dreams!

A guest post by Joelle Prochera

Dream Along With Me
Goal setting for results beyond your wildest dreams!

Joelle Prochera

Joelle Prochera

What is a dream but a thought about what could be.  If you look around, what do you see? A building, coffee mug, piece of furniture, the city you live; they all started as someone’s dream.

Your favorite song started as someone’s dream.
The airplane started as someone’s dream.
Your business started as a dream.

You each have dreams for your life, your family, your business. Dreams of the person you can be and the difference you can make.  Contrary to what some say, dreaming is not just idle fantasy.  Dreaming is the beginning of all things. With clear intention and specific action, your dreams can come true.

So, as you sit down to create some fresh new goals….are you ready to dream?

Step 1. Clear the way.

Before you can get clear on what the year will bring, you may need to first clear some clutter out of the way.  I am not talking about cleaning out your closets or organizing the garage (although those are great ideas as well). What I am suggesting is that you first clear your head.

After speaking with thousands of people as a professional life coach, I can say with confidence that the #1 thing standing between you and your dreams is your own thinking about what you can’t do and why you cannot do it.  It’s time to clear the way for your dreams.

Action:  Let go of…

•    what you think you cannot have.
•    what you think you could never accomplish.
•    what others have told you, you could never be.

In fact…for right now, let it all go.  Yes EVERYTHING! (Ahhhh, it gets nice and quiet when you clear out all that mental chatter.)

Now you have that great big space to create in, let’s fill it up with your dreams

Step 2. Ready. Set. Dream!

Whatever you are moved and inspired to create in your life, those desires are there for a reason. Following your dreams is the path to joy and fulfillment.  So let’s get dreaming!

Action:  Answer the following questions in detail:

•    If anything were possible for you and your life ….what would you want?
•    Who would you have around you?
•    What would you see out your window?
•    What would you create with your business?
•    How would you spend your days?

Write it all down and fill in every detail.  Keep working it until you can read what you wrote and it puts a great big smile on your face.

Once you have created this masterpiece, give it the place of honor it deserves.  Put it somewhere that will demand your attention.  Put it on your bathroom mirror, the door to your office, on the front of your “personal development” binder.  Not a day should go by when you are not reminded of what you have chosen to create. (Need a little inspiration? For examples of other visions visit  www.coachjoelle.com/dreambuilder.html .)

Step 3. The path to your dreams is paved with action:

Action is the key to taking your dreams out of the clouds and rooting them firmly in reality.  Your actions do not have to be grandiose, scary or painful. They just need to move you forward.  In fact, the most effective actions are usually the ones that follow your interests, come naturally or feel fun to you.

Action:   Write down 3-5 things can you do this week to make your visions reality, put them in your calendar and do them!

•    Schedule 30 minutes every Monday to review your vision, celebrate the week’s accomplishments and set 3-5 new actions.
•    For the courageous: Call 1 person who you trust, who believes in your dreams and supports your success and tell them what you will be doing this week. I am not kidding. Go ahead. Make the call now.

Make Your Dreams Reality

Know that you were never given a dream without the ability to fulfill it.  In the months ahead, keep your vision close.  Keep taking action and surround yourself with people that support you and believe in your dreams.

Enjoy the ride!
