By Donna Marie Thompson

There are many common myths about running a small business. Most of them simply are not true. And worse yet, these myths can take you off track. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t be successful if you take every Friday off!

When I speak at conferences around the country one of the biggest myths I encounter is that: Working harder is the best way to succeed.

Let’s take a closer look at this troublesome myth and then we will bust it together.

How About You?

Are you working longer hours, doing more, making more calls, and just doing more and more things? How’s that working for you? And how can you really tell? Do you know for sure which activities in your business are really paying off in proportion to the investment of your time and resources? And you know from experience that it can be exhausting to work 14 hours a day. It doesn’t have to be this way.

To take charge, it takes a critical mindset to begin to assess:

  • What’s really working in your business?
  • What activities are truly worth your time?
  • Which ones are not?

Customer Value is Key

Working harder is not the answer unless the specific activity you’re doing directly builds customer value and boosts your profits. Working harder is not the answer if it doesn’t produce the measurable results you’re looking for!

Why? Plain and simple, many business owners can be wasting up to 30% of their time! You’ve had that feeling before, haven’t you? At the end of the day you look back and wonder what exactly you accomplished in all of the busyness.

If you would do it again, what would you change? Would you:

  • Define your objectives more clearly and in greater detail
  • Clarify objectives and find common ground
  • Set an agenda with topics and actions.

Just 10% Makes a Big Difference

Imagine what your life would be like if you were just 10% more efficient? Just 10% more productive? Think about it. If you’re working 40 hours a week now, that’s 4 full hours handed to you on a platter. That could be Friday afternoon off for you to do anything you want. Think of your new-found freedom. Wow.

The Shift

This shift begins for you in your business when you jealously guard you time; it’s a key tool to stop working so much and start taking every Friday off. And the good news is you can still get all of the important stuff done.

It’s really that simple. Just start small and begin to cut a little waste. Easy does it and an amazing transformation will begin to take place in your business and in your life.

You probably realize deep down there’s no prize in business for working bunches and bunches of hours. That’s not a good measure of success.

However, there is a prize in business for delivering real results. Measurable results. Results that matter to your customers. Integrity. Excellence. Results.

Your Top 3 Time Wasters

We all have time wasters. Interruptions. Phone calls. Emails. The internet. Invitations that take you away from getting your work done.

What are your top three time wasters each week? Make a list. How much time do you spend each week on each of these time wasters?

The good news is that there are simple ways to minimize these time wasters at the source by setting up boundaries; the best tool is you. When you’re on task, you’re committed to stay on task. Think about your next call:

  • What is the purpose of your communication?
    • Why meet when you can call?
    • Why call when you can text? Time to Take Action

ACTION: For each item on your to-do list, assess what is the most efficient and most effective way to get it done once and right. And that could very well be for you to delegate it to someone else.

Eliminate it. Delegate it. Simplify it. Or get it done.

Take a look at your business and retain only those activities which contribute directly to both customer satisfaction and your bottom line.

Your Freedom

You can take every Friday off. Yes, you can.

Even if you start with every other Friday afternoon, you’re well on your way. You don’t need to do everything you’ve been doing. It’s okay to let some things go. The world will not stop spinning.

Your world will start spinning with great delight once you commit to only doing the right things right.

Enjoy your Friday off!
