As a marketer, I’m always curious about what’s going on in the world of advertising. And in my day, I’ve seen some ads that have been truly wonderful (loosly defined by me as being enjoyable to watch while being effective for the brand being represented) to some that are truly awful (can’t stand to watch them, regardless of whether they were effective – and usually they were not).
This latest campaign that I happened to stumble across surprised me. (Can you guess who is behind it?) It’s quite a clever campaign, and I’m still wondering what to think. It’s a viral campaign that’s spreading quickly online via this blog and Twitter, as well as many other social media sites. The blog is actually a combination advertisement and research tool (visit the Help Me! section). It’s engaging, and it’s easy to see why it’s going viral (i.e., spreading like a virus – only the brand behind this campaign hopes, in a good way).
All that aside – it’s the subject matter I’m curious about … have they crossed the line in their methods of talking about this most “womanly” of subjects — or is it all in good fun?
Check it out here – and then let me know what you think!

Where is the marketing value in this kid’s personal web site? He seems to be expressing himself in a shocking way, that’s all. The shock value of advertising is getting out of hand. What am I missing? Is there a advertising message buried somewhere? I am not amused enough to dig deeply into his adolescent story.
Hi Mary Anne,
Thanks for your reply! The really shocking thing to me is that “the kid” isn’t even real … he’s an actor who is playing a part in an ad campaign created by a products company. I’m purposefully being secretive about who it is because I’m really interested in hearing what other’s opinions and feelings are about this campaign. I can completely understand your perspective on the shock value and whether there’s a message here – obviously, they didn’t connect with you!
Looking forward to hearing if others feel the same way, or see this from a different perspective!
